Design Technology Intent
Here at Swalecliffe, our children are encouraged to develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently in order to engage successfully in an increasingly technological world.
We want our children to progressively build on their skills and knowledge from Reception through to Year 6 in order to design and make high quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users, as much as possible linked to other subjects in the curriculum. In addition to design and production, teachers plan in opportunities for the children to evaluate and then improve on their designs. Wherever possible and appropriate, children use computer programs to complement their D.T. learning.
Britain has a strong heritage of innovative designers, from the Industrial Revolution to the design of the iMac. Innovative designers such as Brunel, Stephenson, Ive, Baird and Berners–Lee have provided us with great footsteps in which to follow. British Values are promoted through this aspect of our D.T. curriculum.
We make sure that children across the whole school have opportunities to learn how to cook and for them to apply their understanding of nutrition and healthy eating. Teachers plan this aspect of D.T. so it links across the curriculum, particularly to science learning. We also run a cookery club after school where children makes delicious things such as French bread pizza, cheese straws and chocolate mousse!
